Dear Friends of KoMSO,

It is our pleasure to present the second KoMSO newsletter of the year. This edition offers current news and success stories from the MSO community. Unfortunately, these news include the cancelation of several important conferences due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Upcoming conferences & events

 

CANCELED: OP20 & UQ20

The "SIAM Conference on Optimization" scheduled to take place from May 26 to 29, 2020 in Hong Kong and the "SIAM Conference on Uncertainty Quantification" scheduled to take place from March, 24 to 27 at TUM in Munich, Germany were both canceled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. It is currently unclear whether the conferences will be rescheduled or if alternative plans can be determined. CANCELED: GAMM2020

The "91st GAMM Annual Meeting" scheduled to take place from March 16 to 20, 2020 in Kassel, Germany was canceled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Further plans are currently unclear. BMBF funding priority "Mathematics for Innovations"

Funding for the approved projects from the latest call ("Development of methods for handling large amounts of data") will start on April 1, 2020. A first overview can be obtained from the funding catalog of the German government (keyword: *05M2020*) or in the foreseeable future (in German) at <https://math4innovation.de>.

 

BMVI call for proposals

The second call for proposals of BMVI's funding guideline "A future-proof, sustainable mobility system through automated and connected driving" is still open until March 27, 2020. "Digital Strategy" of the EU commission

On February 19, 2020 president von der Leyen presented the EU commission's "Digital Strategy". Special focus lies on the transparent use of AI and establishing a European market for data. Success stories & achievements

 

Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize

Last year Michael Bortz and Karl-Heinz Küfer of Fraunhofer ITWM got awarded the "Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize" for their work on saving energy in the production of chemicals using MSO techniques. The European Mathematical Society produced a short movie on the profound impact maths has on life and business in the 21st century featuring KoMSO board member Dirk Hartmann.
